Canadian Trail - Operation Veritable
Переглядів 27Місяць тому
Launched on February 8, 1945, Operation Veritable was the northern part of an allied pincer movement intended to push back the Germans over the Rhine River. 🇨🇦 Extremely bad weather conditions and the German destruction of several Roer dams delayed the start of the American attack from the South, while it drastically slowed down the British and Canadian advance from the North. However, a few da...

My late grandfather was a WWII veteran who earned 5 battle stars in the European Theater. He started his trip through continental Europe on Omaha Beach and ended the war in Pilsen, Czech Republic. He was at the liberation of Buchenwald. He also never spoke about it to my mother or her sisters until 40 years later. When I discussed his being there with him, when he was in his late 80s, he broke down into tears. After discussing the horrors, I asked him what was an indication that there was something different near here? His reply was: "The smell." I learned two important things from him: 1. There are horrors that can never be unseen. 2. There is trauma that can never be forgotten. History must be kept alive to prevent the principles of Nazism from taking over again. We all have a commitment to prevent these dark forces from taking over by educating and studying history.

I visited Buchenwald in 2016, and you can still feel the weight there, as soon as you step into the camp, a crushing weight comes over you, the weight of a million human souls

I saw an episode on this, it was gut wrenching. how the people were treated. And the townspeople acted dumb when they saw the bodies. There were literal pieces of flesh and human ash raining on them and they did nothing and acted like the didnt know, but they did very well know. And another thing is that we will never know how the entire camp would look like today, because it seems like a lot of it has been torn down, most likely by the SS

My great grandfather was a survivor from this camp. He was imprisioned for 5 years and was instructed to not try to leave the camp until the Allied forces arrived because of the mines that were in the surroundings. Seems that after the Nazis left, some prisioners tried to leave the camp on their own and were killed by the mines

Just like with Pacific Island of Pelelieu , which was to cover General McArthurs (I think) right flank , as he invaded the Phillipines , The Hurtgen Forrest should of been by passed ! These two objectives weren't of any importance except it's cost in lives Axis , Allied. The Hurtgen could of been skipped ,but the USA forces wanted to be macho , and paid for it in nearly 28- 34,000 losses , as did The Nazis too. Nothing was signicantly gained by trying to flush out the Wehrmacht that was very adroitly hunkered in well emplaced defensive positions , and the Same went for Pelelieu . Both operations began in early 9/1944 , with the Hurtgen going on a few mos. more. Casualties were heavy for the USA in both operations , on both sides of the world. The Hurtgen campaign was not meticulously looked @ , and studied. Not one higher up came to Evan take a sneak peek at the situation on Hurtgen , nor on Pelelieu. But our industrial might , and gutsy troops prevailed. In Hurtgen the Americans had @ least 7 well trained IDs fed piecemeal , and were mauled. It was a near blunder. And, there were others around that time. General Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery's Operation Market Garden ( my grandpa was in that w/ the 82nd Airborne Division), the Walcheren Islands around the Dutch/ Belgian Coasts , The Battle For Aachen 9/1944, General Patton getting a bloody nose @ The Battle For Metz around mid- 9/1944, General Patch's 7th Army struggling in The Vosges Mtn's, , and the Pelelieu , Phillipines, and Saipan campaigns , which were bloody. The Allies would prevail due to its manpower and industrial might!

The military cemetery in Vossenack is in a terrible state of neglect. I wonder if this is a deliberate act of the current German authorities, a perverse way of criminalising their own fallen soldiers.

I remember visiting all the places shown on the Operation Blackcock videos back in 1997. Myself and my brother accompanied my father (Lt. Terence Chamberlain, 6 Commando) from Normandy to Germany following the routes of his war service. He was the first British soldier over the bridge at Roermond. We mentioned this at a local hotel and the owner introduced us to his father who was a young boy at the time and said he witnessed the first soldiers crossing! He kindly showed us around all the sites and a local historian showed my father the place where his friend had died in the care of the German Paratroops (Lt. Hugo, 6 Commando). altogether an unforgettable experience.

Pity your works of remembrance and reconciliation aren't better known. I'm ex pat Northern Irish, married to a northern French Ch'ti (watch the pronunciation!), who lived in Valenciennes, in the Nord-pas-de-Calais (59) for over 8 years, and prised out a few stories of the war and occupation. Now over a year and a half in the SE of Bretagne, in Vannes, Morbihan (56), where things were even more complicated with high participitation in the resistance, both for those who went to the UK, or through the French north African territories, and those who stayed to fight under cover, and those fanitical Breton seperatists who enthusiastically joined the Nazi elite forces, to root out the resistants, Jews, Communists, etc, etc, folornly believing the Nazi propaganda, that they would eventually give Bretagne independent status, finding different and more complicated stories. My wonderful French in-laws who have adopted the Irish nutter as one of their own, and particularly my lovely mother in law (forget the jokes, we are complicit in jokes and games with the others!) have helped me understand the real history of the two world wars, the agony, and risks of resisting the occupiers. Unlike me my mother in law has never forgiven the germans, as they were billeted in her mother's house, and they were the brutal sort. Keep up the great work, unearthing of more personal histories, and forgetting the enmities, and forging amities, for all those who suffered, no matter which side. Faugh a ballagh!

Don't people realize it doesn't take much for people to act like animals, the "i was just following orders" is BS, they and the towns people knew what was going on, and they enjoyed it, they are wicked
